How do I check a barcode number?

Type or paste the number above, or scan it with your camera or a photo. The checker finds the barcode type, checks its length and check digit, explains each part and shows the barcode. It doesn’t look the number up in any database, so it can’t tell you which product it belongs to.

How is an EAN-13 check digit calculated?

Take the first 12 digits. From the right, multiply them by 3, 1, 3, 1 and so on, and add the results. The check digit is the number that brings the total up to the next multiple of 10. This page works as an EAN check digit calculator: type 12 digits with any last digit and it tells you the right one. The same rule works for UPC-A, EAN-8, ITF-14 (GTIN-14) and SSCC.

What does a barcode starting with 890 mean?

890 is the prefix of GS1 India: the company number in the barcode was issued through GS1 India. It doesn’t prove where the product was made, and this checker can’t tell whether the number is licensed to the business using it. Ask the brand owner or GS1 if you need to know.

Is my barcode GS1 certified if it passes here?

No. This page runs software checks of the number and shows GS1’s published sizes. It isn’t a GS1 certification or a print-quality grade. Print a sample at the size you plan and scan it with the scanner it’s meant for, or have it verified.

Does the camera picture or my number get uploaded?

No. The checker, the camera and photo reading all run in your browser. Nothing you type, scan or choose is sent to Tamvya or anyone else.

Why didn’t my GS1 DataBar Expanded scan?

Phone cameras read GS1 DataBar Expanded less reliably than other barcodes. A failed read here doesn’t mean the barcode is bad: type its data in brackets instead, and check the printed label with the scanner it’s meant for.
